Business

ow, busy week! It seems like there’s so much going on lately, it’s hard to keep up with. I’ve been writing like mad — some of it is even worth keeping. Much of it . . . is not. *sighs* I’ve started my first chapter about four times and pitched it. I hate chapter one with a passion bordering on violence. I think I may actually have it hammered out, now, though. At least, well enough that I can soldier through it.
I’m wildly excited about this particular iteration of the story — I’ve had this series of stories living in my head for a long time now, and it feels good to finally be getting them out. I was talking to Squatch over coffee last night about various aspects of the story (I suspect my friends will be tired of this story before too much longer), and one thing I mentioned was my amazement over how much many of these characters have changed.
The character of Alice, for example, used to be a fairly straight-laced, standard good guy, ten or fifteen years ago. Now . . . lord, she’s just this heinous psychopath who is only staying on the “good guy” side of the line by a hair. The Irishman, a character who began life based on a shyster carny I met at the county fair one year when I was in high school, has really developed in some amazing ways. I find it extremely interesting to look at these characters now, and look at what they were even five years ago, and see the difference. That may be one of the more telling differences of how much I’ve changed in the last decade or so.
One thing I mentioned last night was that, while I’ve been upset with myself for having wasted so much time not writing these last few years, I’m actually really pleased that I didn’t write this story ten or fifteen years ago. It would have sucked. Now, it’s got a chance.
Another highlight of last night was that I got to hear a rough cut of Squatch’s four-track album, and it’s pretty good. It’ll be available here once he’s got it finished, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. The album is made up of four original songs. One is a bluesy-sounding instrumental that I really like. The first track, which I can’t remember the name of, even though he told me, is a grungier-sounding song. Not my favorite genre of music, but it sounds good. The second track is faster, a classic rock sound. I didn’t get to hear vocals for that one because for some reason, they didn’t burn to the CD when Squatch was doing it, so he has to redo that one. The third I really liked. That was the first time I’ve ever heard Squatch sing, despite having known him for nearly ten years now. He’s got a good voice. I’ve always been told that he sings well. It was fun to have it proved for me.
Meanwhile, changes are afoot at the workplace as well. Our menu has been fiddled with, as have our hours. As per usual, I await the fallout of the changes with dread, because these people don’t have a great track record with their menu changes. I guess we’ll see, though.
I’ve been neglecting my poor blog of late, as well as a few other little projects, due to the writing and general business of life. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick back up on that soon enough. And on that note, cheers. I’m out.
