emispheric deal needs advocates, U.S. envoy says — U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins admits that political people have to do a better job of telling the public about the Security and Prosperity Partnership, the centrepiece of this week’s North American summit and fuel for angry demonstrations against Canada-U.S. coziness.
I think, when asked about the SPP and a possible North American Union, President Bush laughed and called the idea “comical”. I’m pretty sure that’s what I saw on CNN. If you do a news search on the SPP or North American Union, you’ll see that, at least, there are a whole lot of Canadians who don’t think the idea is very comical at all. The US media is largely silent. CNN’s Lou Dobbs covered the August 20th meeting in Montebello . . . for one show. And then nothing.
Meanwhile, Jack McClellen has been let out of jail.
A self-described pedophile was released from jail Tuesday after prosecutors dropped a criminal case accusing him of violating a judge’s order prohibiting him from being within 30 feet of children anywhere in California for three years.
Prosecutors could not pursue the case against Jack McClellan, 45, after they determined the order was invalid because the judge failed to schedule and give McClellan proper notice of a hearing required to argue the merits of imposing such a long-lasting order before it is issued.
Spotted an item of interest on CNN last night about Mother Teresa — she apparently doubted her faith frequently.
The writings address numerous topics, but the ones most likely to create a stir are what Doubleday called the “dark letters.”
”Please pray specially for me that I may not spoil His work and that Our Lord may show Himself — for there is such terrible darkness within me, as if everything was dead,” she wrote in 1953. “It has been like this more or less from the time I started ‘the work.”‘
Then in 1956: “Such deep longing for God — and … repulsed — empty — no faith — no love — no zeal. (Saving) souls holds no attraction — Heaven means nothing — pray for me please that I keep smiling at Him in spite of everything.”
And then in 1959: “If there be no God — there can be no soul — if there is no Soul then Jesus — You also are not true.”
At times she also found it hard to pray.
”I utter words of community prayers — and try my utmost to get out of every word the sweetness it has to give — but my prayer of union is not there any longer — I no longer pray.”
