[...] Synthetic compound triggers cancer cell “suicide” — 28 Aug, (foodconsumer.org) - A synthetic molecule that triggers cancer cells to commit suicide was effective in mouse cancer models, scientists said. They hope the finding will herald in new drugs that can activate this mechanism that causes cancer cells to hasten their own death. Extremely interesting, although the article makes it sound as though this treatment would apply to only certain patients that meet the screening requirements. Of course, it’s in the early stages, so who knows. Maybe it’ll work for everyone — or not at all. Google Apps for Your Domain — Google launched today a hosted software package of productivity tools that places it closer into competition with Microsoft’s Live products. I’ll have to go have a peek at this. I’ve poked around Google’s software and such before — somethings are incredibly cool, other things, not so much. Everyone Argues About Planets — THE solar system’s biggest planets are at risk of being stripped of their status after the world’s top astronomers voted to downgrade Pluto into the dwarf planet category. Experts claim that the definition for planets adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) could also see Neptune downgraded. They say that both planets fail to meet all the criteria set by the IAU. This amuses me vastly. It’s like a scientific catfight. Did we really even need to fiddle with the definition of a planet? Don’t we have real problems to solve? Anti-Contraception Zealots Move To Their Own Plan B, from Bitch Ph.D.. Folks, say it with me now: “Plan B is not abortion.” Plan B is contraception. Plan B will not cause an abortion. It’s a contraception that you take after the fact, like when you’re all done and you hear your boyfriend say, “Oh, shit. The condom broke.” Then you take Plan B. Plan B is highly useful, particularly for women who have problems using a regular birth control method, like the Pill. Sometimes things like the pill affect women quite badly when they have to take it all month long, but they might be able to handle a one-dose pill in cases of “oopsies” like broken condoms. From Daily Kos, We Were Americans. One year ago, Katrina was screaming up onto the coast, destroying all in her path. We sat, transfixed, in front of our TVs, watching. We watched as the hurricane passed over, leaving New Orleans, as well as much of the coastal area, in rubble. And then, if we had any heart at all, we watched in further horror as our duly-elected government ignored the victims of Katrina, lied to us, fucked it up, made empty promises, and even now, a year later, haven’t really managed to do much of a damn thing for the coast. Katrina: Katrina Devastates South, Underlines Incompetency of US Government.
